It was a sunny warm day when I said goodbye to Appleby Castle. I wasn't looking forward to the long drive south and had planned a pitstop in Stoke, but I wasn't to make it that far. The traffic on the M6 was heavy, just before Preston, a sign notified me of long delays and gridlock. Making a snap decision, I took a road going east and aimed for the M1.

I'd only been travelling a few minutes when I passed a sign for Samlesbury. The name rang a bell and I knew I had to stop. To say I was happy, was an understatement. Possibly like you, I'd seen the house featured on TV programmes and had thought it would be worth a trip, but being so far from home I'd never quite made it.

Some locations send a shiver through you, as soon as you step out of the car. Samlesbury Hall is quite something to be behold, the pictures don't do it justice. It doesn't feel like a coporate building, its esscence is still very much a cosy family home. As I entered the building, I felt a draw, then the sensation of being hugged. This rarely happens. Walking around the house as a guest, I felt as if I was being accompanied by friends.

I would usually feature clips from the video on this page, but there were numerous EVP that I could not include. Along with the voices you may have already heard, these are exceptionally good recordings. I hope you enjoy listening to the voices of those who want still to be heard.

    • Arriving at Samlesbury, I was stunned to enter via the porch and not see a ticket booth. Instead there was a sign notifying me that entrance was free, but donations were welcome. I gladly paid a contribution before walking further into the hallway. The gentleman who speaks sounds rather proud there's no charge.

  • When I visit a property alone, I am guilty sometimes of talking drivel. I was at the time in the upper balcony of the chapel; the room at the time, was empty aside from a pew, a desk and a chair. In the video, you hear me ask for permission to sit down.

  • This is a curious clip recorded in the upper hall. The voice is strangely familiar to me but I haven't been able to find the EVP it reminds me of. Although mention of the devil to some is concerning, to me it is more likely to be a chide; talking with the dead would have been somewhat dangerous for members of the household.

  • Entering the dining room, the decoration is glorious. It may be a pastiche of the Tudor period, but it's still a wow room. The male speaker's comment is lovely to hear. I felt so welcomed at Samlesbury, those who spoke came through extremely clearly and I really was very happy that I'd visited.

  • I cannot pretend to have a definitive story behind the message, but I suspect it may reflect the men killed when trying to help Lady Dorothy flee. Having searched, I was unable to find an account of who was slain that night.
